Medicinema

9th July 2014

MediCinema brings the real benefits of cinematherapy to patients and their families throughout the UK. They do this by building, installing and running state-of-the-art cinemas in hospitals and other places of care. Our MediCinemas are fully equipped with the latest technology, including Dolby surround sound, RealD 3D technology and large silver screens, and they use the same architects and supplies as those used by mainstream cinemas so they look and feel like any other cinema. Thanks to the support of the film industry, they show current releases so patients do not have to miss out on seeing the latest blockbusters just because they are in hospital. Many patients comment that this helps break the ice with friends when they visit, as it gives them something other than their condition to talk about. Their cinemas are as much built for a healthcare setting as they are to give a fully immersive cinema experience. No-matter if a patient is in a wheelchair, attached to a drip or even unable to leave their bed, they are able to welcome them, and to ensure their safety throughout the film, we hire two NHS nurses for every screening. Thanks to the support of their donors, their screenings are completely free for all patients and their families.

St. Barts Cyberknife & CT Scanner

Metropolitan Masonic Charity -

31st July 2014

Grove Park Kent Lodge are Grand Patron of the Metropolitan Masonic Charity (MMC) Cyberknife appeal. This appeal started in 2010 and London Masons have raised sufficient funds to not only donate a Cyberknife to St Barts hospital in London but also a CT Scanner as well.

A CyberKnife is a state-of the-art radiotherapy treatment in the fight against cancer.

The CyberKnife treatment does not involve any surgical operations; in fact, the CyberKnife System is the world’s first and only robotic radiosurgery system to treat the entire body non-invasively including areas such as the prostate, lung, brain, spine, liver, pancreas and kidney. It provides a pain-free option for patients, who may have historically inoperable or surgically complex tumours.

The CyberKnife can treat both cancerous and non-cancerous tumours located in all parts of the body. The treatment delivers beams of high dose radiation to tumours with extreme accuracy without harming the surrounding areas such as healthy tissue, adjoining organs or even the spine. This CyberKnife is one of only three available in NHS Hospitals UK wide, enabling both NHS and private patients the option of treatment – thus also offering new hope to patients from the entire UK.

Foundation for Jimmy

9th July 2014

The Foundation for Jimmy has been set up as a positive way of remembering the life of Jimmy Mizen, who was tragically murdered in May 2008. The foundation's mission is to make young people safer; they promote participation within the community, increase young people’s awareness of the potential outcomes of actions and support development into independent and responsible individuals. A member of our lodge is heavily involved in the foundation and the lodge supports him and the foundation wherever possible.
